What Size Lampshade do I Need?

When you're looking to replace or upgrade a lampshade, getting the right size is crucial for both function and aesthetics. A shade that's too large can overwhelm your space, while one that’s too small may not provide the light coverage you need. Here's a simple guide on how to measure a lampshade for a perfect fit.

1. Measure the Height The height of the lampshade is measured from the top of the lampshade to the bottom. If the lampshade has a slight flare, take the measurement from the widest point at the base (This can also be referred to as the slope)

2. Measure the Diameter (Width) Next, measure the diameter of the lampshade at both the top and bottom. For a cylindrical Drum shade, the top and bottom will usually be the same size. If the shade flares out (Empire Shaped), the bottom diameter will be wider.

If you are measuring a Drum Shaped Shade, you will have two measurements, Diameter and Height. Whereas if you are measuring an Empire Shaped shade, you will have 3 measurements, Top, Bottom and Slope.

Tip: If you get an A4 piece of paper and turn it on its side (landscape) this is the approx the front profile of a 12inch (30cm) diameter shade. This will give you an idea of sizing for the room
